Great Sounding, Economical Loudspeaker Kits
DIY Loudspeaker kits are a great way to have superb sound at a reasonable price. The beautiful enclosures will
enhance your listening environment, and the design has been tested using the best drivers, parts and accessories
available. This is also an opportunity to learn about the mysterious contents of that enclosure by assembling it yourself.
Together with reading any of the outstanding books available on designing, building and testing a speaker system,
you can gain insight into the complex variables that influenced the design you selected. More than once, performance
has been improved by something as seemingly mundane as changing the quantity or positioning of the kit’s damping
or stuffing. This may seem like a contradiction, since the speaker kit has already been tested, but you will be listening
in your own, not the testing environment. This is called tweaking, and even the most expensive speaker systems are
refined the same way. The best course is to do some reading on optimally positioning your speakers, making the
adjustments, then patiently listening to your music of choice over an extended period of time. You’ll then be in a
better position, after your reading, to consider whether to make any tweaks at all. Results involve compromise,
and it’s likely that your listening mechanism will adjust to any minor shortfalls. Sound quality is of course subjective,
so be sure to consider your tastes when evaluating the characteristics of prospective kits.
